The holidays sure can be a stressful time of the year. Cooking for large groups can be a huge pain and you will never please everyone's taste buds. Not to mention everyone's dietary needs. And cleaning, don't even start on cleaning. Going over the top to show Aunt Jennifer that your house is spotless even though the second the kids get loose it turns right back into the storm it was before. The part that really gets me is all of the gift giving. This can really add up and most of the time the products that you buy end up in a landfill. I see it every year in my neighborhood. The day after Christmas we have boxes upon boxes of toys and TV's. These might make you happy for a short amount of time but the memories usually fade quickly and you move on. Not to mention that most Christmas gifts are for one person and not meant to be used together. All of these added stressors really make it difficult to kick back and enjoy what the holiday's are meant for. Living in the moment with Family and Friends that you love and care about. This year give a different gift. The gift of Adventure and Experiences. A day out tubing with the family is a great way to bond and focus on eachother. No cell phones, internet, iPads, just family and the great outdoors. Or if your family is after adrenaline take a Zipline Canopy Tour trip through the trees along the beautiful Potomac river. Your family deserves to a break from the distractions and rat race. It might be hard to imagine now as we look outside to see blistering cold and frigid rain. But imagine you and your family bonding in nature. Or taking a camping trip on the Potomac to enjoy the Beautiful Harpers Ferry Campground. For a limited time only we are offering Buy One Get One Free gift certificates. Get them now while they last and enjoy some family time. Bogo Gift Certificates
We are happy to welcome Chris Cox as our newAssistant General Manager. Chris and his wife, Alison, have two children, Chandler (11) and Anna Grace (14). Chris and Alison are both natives of the Eastern Panhandle who fairly recently settled in Charles Town after Chris retired from the Army in the Summer of 2016. According to TripAdvisor, Harpers Ferry is a beautiful small town. The town is part historic village with many historic landmarks. "I'm not usually one for history, but the historical aspect is really interesting, and I just love the layout of the land and how the town is," said Aiden Brammeier, a Ranson resident. Talyn Underwood works at The Coffee Mill in town. She says she loves Harpers Ferry because it attracts people from all over. "We have a couple foreigners that come around from all different types of countries and everyone is just really nice, we make friendships," said Underwood. Many people say a big draw to the area is the easy access to the hiking trails. "There are a lot of hiking trails around here, but this is probably my favorite, absolutely," said Amy Talkington, a Harpers Ferry visitor. "And I keep finding more spots that I'm always being surprised and amazed by. All the different things we find even though I've been so many times, still finding new places," said Riley Ruments, a Harpers Ferry visitor. In addition to the hiking trails, there is rich history and scenic views. Dedrik Shafer and Tremaine Shafer, who are brothers, say their family moved out here not only because of the town's beauty, but because of the peace and quiet the town offers. "So we chose Harpers Ferry because it was one of the quietest places and peaceful and big stress relief off of my mom," said Tremaine Shafer.

The Guide Life: Behind the Thrills with Matt Knott Do you ever just wonder what it’s like in someone else’s world? Each month, we’ll be giving you a mini peek into the quirky and intriguing side of our employees (or in the case of today’s highlight…our CEO!). River Riders' CEO Shares about Adventure We asked Matt Knott, president and CEO of River Riders, a few fun questions about his journey in the adventure industry. While Matt started his adventure journey as a river guide, since he’s been CEO and president of the growing company, his time is spent less ‘in the middle of adventure’ and more ‘in the middle of the business’. But he still loves the thrill of running such an exciting company and makes sure he finds time to foster his own love for adventure! Enjoy his answers below. Oh, and check out “How do you relax?” Pretty epic way to relax! Question: How long have you been with River Riders? Answer: “24 years” Question: How did you get into the guiding/adventure related industry? Answer: “My older brother and several friends were raft guides. A friend of mine suggested we respond to an ad in the paper, but it was for Blue Ridge Outfitters. We went to River Riders on accident and loved it. The first time I went rafting that day, I knew it was what I wanted to do.” We’d say that ended up being a pretty fortuitous accident! Question: What’s the first memory you have of an adrenaline rush when you were a child? Answer: “My dad’s cousin, who worked on our farm, told me that when I was 3 years old, they couldn’t find me one day. They finally found me standing in the middle of the barnyard with the cows in a major thunderstorm looking up at the sky!” Question: What’s the absolute craziest thing you’ve ever done? Answer: “Quitting my job at State Farm and buying River Riders” We’re glad you did! Question: What would you say to someone that wants adventure but doesn’t know how to make the time for it? Answer: “You can’t afford not to do it. The only way to really find yourself is to get out of your comfort zone and explore nature.” Question: Most awkward moment on the river…go… Answer: “As a guide, once, I fell out of the raft and landed on my head on a rock, then I had to swim back to the raft in excruciating neck pain and have my guests help me back in the raft because it hurt so much. I finished the run, though!” Yes, awkward. But rather ‘boss’ that you finished! Question: What did you have for breakfast this morning? Answer: “Cranberry oatmeal” So healthy! Nice. Question: How do you relax? Answer: “Fly airplanes” So…can we expect that as the next added adventure at River Riders?! Question: What’s an adventure or destination on your bucket list? Answer: “I love travelling with my family. I still have hundreds of places I want to go. The one I always talk about, though, is running the Grand Canyon.” Ooh, can we come?! Thanks, Matt, for sharing a little about yourself and for continuing to provide great experiences for all of us seeking adventure! To see more of our other employees, visit Riverriders.com.
