The Needles Section of the Potomac River (class I-III) makes for a more enjoyable experience and is also part of the Potomac National Heritage Trail. This trip includes more time for swimming and historical information, as its laid back pace and mild rapids make for a leisurely day in the sun.  All weekend departures and 10 am weekday departures include a delicious picnic style cookout after the trip. Rafts accommodate as many as seven guests, although the number of participants in each raft may vary due to water levels and size of group members. At least 65 million years in its present course, the New River was once part of an immense lake that covered much of the New River Gorge area. The river shares the geological aspect of the Nile, flowing south to north, with its headwaters in the Blue Ridge Mts. of North Carolina. As the river flows through Virginia into West Virginia, it picks up several warm water tributaries, making it an unusually warm water river (temperatures range from 55 Degrees in April to 80 degrees in August). Today the 53 miles of this ancient river are preserved as the New River Gorge National River under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. The river flows through a rugged canyon up to 1300 feet in depth. The canyon is majestic, where a fast growing deciduous forest hides the old coal towns that once flourished along the banks of the New River. In 1978 the National Park Service declared the New River a National River and has since sought to preserve and protect it. Rafted commercially for the first time in 1969, the New River continues to provide thrills for all ages and has become known as the "Grand Canyon" of the eastern U.S.. It is truly considered world-class and beckons only serious whitewater enthusiasts. Continuous rapids demand your constant attention, as well as the guide's. Technical maneuvering allows passage through narrow chutes and rocky ledges. If you crave non-stop action, this is the trip for you! (Minimum age is 15 years old.) Previous rafting experience is recommended.   Trip Details: This is the first whitewater rafting trip of the day on the Upper Gauley…a very early start. We use the larger boats that can moderate the ride…and less chance for an unscheduled swim. Lunch is included and you’ll be back to ACE early in the afternoon. The Upper Gauley is full force excitement. Seven Class V-V+ rapids, one being the infamous 14-foot waterfall known as "Sweet's Falls." Crowds of people stick around Sweet's to watch the other boats come through. Once you are through, you can join in the stadium atmosphere as you enjoy your hot grilled lunch and anticipate more massive waves in the afternoon. This trip is recommended for experienced rafters.   Traditional Fall Lower Gauley - #1 Choice The Lower Section of the Gauley is often overlooked because of the World Class fame of the Lower New and the fact that it is suitable for first timers. The Lower Gauley is the perfect next step for those who have rafted the New and are looking for a bigger challenge. Recommended for intermediate rafters age 12 and up, this section of river is characterized by over 35 major rapids with names like "Pure Screaming Hell", "Canyon Doors" and "Heaven Help Us", providing excitement for all those who meet its challenge. There are pools below each rapid to pick up any swimmers. This feature allows us to run first-timers on this truly unusual big water whitewater river. Scenic beauty and crisp, clean water are highlights of this trip most simply noted as breathtaking! (Minimum age is 12 years old.)   Trip Details: Our Traditional Lower Gauley trip is run in 16-foot, 9-10 person rafts, the industry standard, to take a little intensity out of the giant Lower Gauley waves and make it more suitable for the less adventurous rafter. Day one: embark down the Upper Gauley with pounding whitewater. Relax by the fire that evening. Day two: take in the stunning cliff walls of the Lower Gauley and the sparking whitewater. This is a continuous river trip, after whitewater rafting on the Upper Gauley camp overnight at Wood's Ferry just below the Upper Gauley take-out.
