This 7 mile excursion includes whirling white water rapids with intermittent calm water, perfect for swimming and splashing. Our expert guides will pilot quality rafts through the section of water where the states of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia come together. Spring and Fall water levels allow for a more exciting experience for adventure seekers ages 6-8 years (50 lbs) and up.

This popular family adventure journeys down the last reaches of the Shenandoah River, including slow water solitude and whitewater action. As you paddle through flat water you can watch for ospreys, great blue herons, and bald eagles, while enjoying the beauty of the Blue Ridge. Be ready for thrills and spills as you charge over “Bull Falls” and whoosh through “Bull’s Tail”, before heading through the Shenandoahs mile-long “Staircase” rapid. Also, take in the history and scenery of the Shenandoah River as you float past Harpers Ferry National Historic Park between the cliffs of Maryland and Loudon Heights, where you join the mighty Potomac. Once you're on the Potomac, watch out for the snarl of the “Mad Dog” and hold onto your booties as you ride the wild “White Horse.” This beautiful and exciting trip is for everyone: beginners to seasoned guests! (Class I-III - sometimes Class I-II+)

	White Water Kayaking offers more adventurous guests in good physical condition a more exciting trip. Paddling our single person, inflatable kayaks called Duckies make the trip more physically challenging and put you one on one with the white water!

Summer Whitewater Rafting on the Potomac River

When Shenandoah River summer levels reach below approximately 1.5 ft, USGS River Gauge we change our white water rafting route to a more suitable section of the Potomac River. The Needles Section of the Potomac River (class I-III) makes for a more enjoyable experience and is also part of the Potomac National Heritage Trail. This trip includes more time for swimming and historical information, as its laid back pace and mild rapids make for a leisurely day in the sun. All weekend departures and 10 am weekday departures include a delicious picnic style cookout after the trip. Juicy hamburgers, hot dogs, a side, and a drink! Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The Needles Section passes through 4 National Parks including the C&O Canal National Park, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, and Appalachian National Scenic Trail, providing an opportunity to view notable historical sites and learn fun fact information. Your guides will lead your raft to the best swimming and surfing spots for extra splashing and playing in the waves of the Potomac. During your trip you'll experience the woosh of “The Dam”, the bubbling of “The Needles Rapid”, the bite of “Wake Up Call”, and the all time favorite wave train, “White Horse”.

This trip is suitable for children 30 lbs and up.
<field_testimonials_value>
"I wanted to share with you our deep appreciation for the guiding you offered to our group last week. Taking 30 8th graders on an outdoor adventure can be a risky business, but because of your professionalism, your vigilance, and your experience, we all felt completely safe (which allowed us to have a terrific time on the river and on the trail).

Thank you for contributing to such a positive experience for our students, and we look forward to seeing you again next spring.
Take care,"

"My husband Gordon and I wanted to say again how much we enjoyed our whitewater trip on Sunday. Our guide Isaac was fabulous. We were disappointed when we went to get our group picture and he had already ridden off on his skateboard! So, we took the best thing -----BEN!! What a hoot he was... We also enjoyed the ride back with Nick's witty stories!!!! And who could forget Shane and his wild man, untamed look. For a stay-at-home mom, this was truly an exciting day. You all have a first-class operation... We are ready for our next adventure!!! We will definitely return next year, kids in tow…"
Teresa and Gordon S

"I wanted to thank you for the accommodations you made for us. The kids had a great time (adults too!). The rafting was excellent. I will make sure I encourage other Scouting organizations to consider using your company. The dinner was well received as well. The boys were very excited about the trip, and the enthusiasm continued when we returned to Brunswick Family Campground and found that a Girl Scout troop was setting up next to us. That created an entirely different set of problems for us!"

West Virginia Whitewater Rafting on the New River

The New River is actually one of the oldest rivers in North America. At least 65 million years in its present course, the New River was once part of an immense lake that covered much of the New River Gorge area. The river shares the geological aspect of the Nile, flowing south to north, with its headwaters in the Blue Ridge Mts. of North Carolina. As the river flows through Virginia into West Virginia, it picks up several warm water tributaries, making it an unusually warm water river (temperatures range from 55 Degrees in April to 80 degrees in August).

Today the 53 miles of this ancient river are preserved as the New River Gorge National River under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. The river flows through a rugged canyon up to 1300 feet in depth. The canyon is majestic, where a fast growing deciduous forest hides the old coal towns that once flourished along the banks of the New River. In 1978 the National Park Service declared the New River a National River and has since sought to preserve and protect it. Rafted commercially for the first time in 1969, the New River continues to provide thrills for all ages and has become known as the "Grand Canyon" of the eastern U.S.. The rapids on the New are classified from Class I to Class V, with I being least difficult and VI being most difficult.

Full Day Upper New Rafts or Duckies

Class I - Class III. The Upper New is a scenic section of river with easy to moderate whitewater action. Perfect for families with younger children, it is a great introduction to rafting. Negotiate rapids like "Silo" and "The Ledges" in our 16-foot (holds 9-10 people) rafts or inflatable kayaks called duckies while you enjoy the majestic beauty this upper canyon has to offer. Learn about local history, play games, and enjoy a great riverside lunch. Skilled professionals guide every trip. (Minimum age is 6 for rafts & 10 to paddle a duckie. 6 to 9 year olds can ride with an adult in a double duckie.)

Full Day Lower New 14' Rafts

Class II- IV+. Paddle America's oldest river canyon, that has been designated a National Treasure administered by the National Park Service (NPS) and is ranked #5 in the Nation and #10 in the World. An excellent intermediate level rafting trip, the Lower New, Class III to Class V, is our most popular Southern WV trip with over 20 legendary big water rapids. When all this water funnels down between the 1000 ft. canyon walls of the New River Gorge, it creates the biggest, wildest and most unusual whitewater rafting east of the Rocky Mountains. This section provides challenges for adventurous novice and intermediate rafters, as well as those with lots of whitewater experience. The first half of the trip offers easier class II & III rapids that allow rafters time to learn to follow guide commands and paddle as a group. Jump Rock allows everyone to get out of the raft alongside the river and jump off of an (approx) 15-20 ft rock into the pool below. After lunch the Lower New alternates from exciting Class IV-V rapids to pools perfect for swimming, allowing paddlers to take a break and enjoy the natural beauty that unfolds within the gorge. Upper and Lower Railroad, the Keeneys, Miller's Folly, and Double Z are among the many rapids that lie in wait on the second half of the trip. You will always be assured of a different and unique adventure no matter when you choose to raft, as no two trips are ever the same.

Our 14' rafts seat 8+ guests plus a guide. We also include a riverside lunch (either grilled or deli style depending on water levels) and complimentary cold beverages after your trip.

Gauley River Whitewater Rafting

    <field_location_value>Fayetteville (southern), WV</field_location_value>

    <field_description_value>
The Gauley River is truly one of the rare jewels of World Class Whitewater. It combines the awesome power of a big water river with tight, technical whitewater that is nearly continuous from beginning to end. The Gauley is rated by many as the best whitewater trip in the world! This river is a dam released river with its water source at Summersville Lake, the states largest man-made lake. Each fall the Army Corp. of Engineers releases the water at Summersville dam in order to bring the lake to its winter pool levels. The optimum whitewater release is near 2400 cubic feet per second. This release is scheduled in cooperation with whitewater outfitters to insure optimum flow for rafting on the Gauley River. With two distinct twelve-mile sections, this river boasts over 75 major rapids ranging from Class III - V! Trips are usually 6 to 8 hours on the water, depending on water levels and are provided by ACE.

Travel south to reach the biggest and baddest whitewater in the East. You'll be glad you did. The moment you arrive you’ll know you’re in the epicenter of Wild, Wonderful West Virginia Whitewater. Nestled in the heart of the Southern West Virginia’s Appalachian Highlands, ACE's basecamp is easy to get to but hard to leave. Share the border with the stunning New River Gorge National River, directly under the world famous New River Gorge Bridge (site of an annual B.A.S.E. and bungee jumping festival). It takes about five and a half hours to get here from Washington, D.C. or Baltimore, MD. The excitement and natural beauty of our rivers and canyons will propel you into an unforgettable and unmatched rafting adventure on America's Best Whitewater.

Traditional Fall Upper Gauley - #1 Choice
This section of the Gauley River is described by the book "Wildwater West Virginia" as '12 miles of the swirling, crashing, pounding end' and is worth every adjective. It is truly considered world-class and beckons only serious whitewater enthusiasts. Continuous rapids demand your constant attention, as well as the guide's. Technical maneuvering allows passage through narrow chutes and rocky ledges. If you crave non-stop action, this is the trip for you!

(Minimum age is 15 years old.) Previous rafting experience is recommended.

Trip Details: This is the first whitewater rafting trip of the day on the Upper Gauley…a very early start. We use the larger boats that can moderate the ride…and less chance for an unscheduled swim. Lunch is included and you’ll be back to ACE early in the afternoon. The Upper Gauley is full force excitement. Seven Class V-V+ rapids, one being the infamous 14-foot waterfall known as "Sweet's Falls." Crowds of people stick around Sweet's to watch the other boats come through. Once you are through, you can join in the stadium atmosphere as you enjoy your hot grilled lunch and anticipate more massive waves in the afternoon. Your 14-foot raft will offer even more adventure as you maneuver through the rocks for the best possible ride. This trip is recommended for experienced rafters.

Traditional Fall Lower Gauley - #1 Choice

The Lower Section of the Gauley is often overlooked because of the World Class fame of the Lower New and the fact that it is suitable for first timers. The Lower Gauley is the perfect next step for those who have rafted the New and are looking for a bigger challenge. Recommended for intermediate rafters age 12 and up, this section of river is characterized by over 35 major rapids with names like "Pure Screaming Hell", "Canyon Doors" and "Heaven Help Us", providing excitement for all those who meet its challenge. There are pools below each rapid to pick up any swimmers. This feature allows us to run first-timers on this truly unusual big water whitewater river. Scenic beauty and crisp, clean water are highlights of this trip most simply noted as breathtaking! (Minimum age is 12 years old.)

Trip Details: Our Traditional Lower Gauley trip is run in 16-foot, 9-10 person rafts, the industry standard, to take a little intensity out of the giant Lower Gauley waves and make it more suitable for the less adventurous rafter. But have no fear; all of the Lower Gauley fun is still included. This is an amazing rafting trip for families and first-timers!

Classic Riverside Overnight
Take a whitewater rafting trip on both stretches of the Gauley without ever leaving the canyon gorge on this overnight trip. Day one: embark down the Upper Gauley with pounding whitewater. Relax by the fire that evening. Day two: take in the stunning cliff walls of the Lower Gauley and the sparking whitewater. This is a continuous river trip, after whitewater rafting on the Upper Gauley camp overnight at Wood's Ferry just below the Upper Gauley take-out. Then we put-in from our overnight campsite and run the Lower Gauley. If you want to run the entire river top to bottom this is the best way to do it.
